A weekend at the Bluebird Music Fest on CU’s campus (tremendous under the radar music fest for the lighter indie scene) brought us searching for the best coffee that Boulder has to offer and we were not disappointed. A mere 1.3 miles northeast of the Pearl Street Mall lies a coffee oasis with a cool vibe, great fruit forward coffee and friendly people. When visiting Boulder, Verb is a must stop for the coffee connoisseur.
Coffee:
The Columbia Gloria Cecilia washed roast was divine and really did bring out the hints of the featured Anise, Fudge and Grapefruit combining in an exquisite tasting. The cortado came artfully in a couplet with some sparkling water. It’s great to see a shop pouring multiple blends. Plus, could it be? Spirit Tea on the menu? For you non coffee drinkers, this is the gold standard and I highly recommend their Malabar blend.
Barista:
Super friendly staff - we were on the early side and beat the crowd which is my preference, but there was a steady stream of people and by the time we left most of the shop was full. The purveyor and barista were happy to talk about their process and the roasts in as much detail as you would like and in a manner that was totally attainable. No pretense; just friendly people serving awesome coffee.
Vibe:
An April snowstorm had us walking in snow for about a mile to the shop. Not a pretty walk, but the iciness disappeared when entering the shop. It’s certainly not a huge shop, but tastefully done with the concrete floors, natural wood cabinetry and white solid surface countertops. Plenty of natural light gives it an airy feel. Probably not a place you can hang in for a long time, but has a good energy with some good tunes playing (we heard a Smiths tune along with some Ray LaMontagne). By the way, there is an excellent bike shop nearby where you can get a great daily rental bike if the weather is cooperating (Full Cycle Bikes). They also have a taproom with music occasionally.
Make You Better
A coffee shop that churns out this quality is tough to find. I think their pastry items could be a little more robust with some savory items or some scones. The design of the coffee bags and sticker are great, but I think the merch seemed like a little bit of an oversight. Maybe I’m just being picky here.
