Prevail Coffee

39 Dexter Ave suite 102, Montgomery, Alabama

The history, memorials, and museums of Montgomery make it a must visit city for anyone interested in American civil history. And while you are in town treat yourself with a stop at Prevail, a coffee roaster with a choice location in Montgomery. After spending a very enjoyable morning in their Montgomery store, I’ll make a point of visiting their other locations in Atlanta and Birmingham. They did everything well.

Coffee:

My cortado was excellent, silky smooth, with a strong, pleasant coffee taste and was appreciatively served in a Gibraltar glass. In a chat with the barista I found out that they heat their steamed milk to 145 degrees, the exact midpoint of the recommended 130-160 range, and my content with their preparation has made me aware that the midpoint is where I’d like it every time. My drip was a Guatemalan bean with a robust mouth feel and a tasty flavor profile of chocolate, peanut butter, and a hint of citrus.

Barista:

A very attentive barista served me and as I enjoyed my cortado at the bar, they thoroughly cleaned aIl surfaces within reach. I had an engaging conversation with my Barista who gave me a sense that a commitment to community and quality is in the DNA of this brand. We also chatted about their beans, a few unusual attentions to detail in their interior space (see vibe section), their lemonade, their live music events on the first Saturday of every month, and their other locations. I had the unmistakable sense that this level of engagement was part and parcel to their brand.

Vibe:

Between the Court Square Fountain, a nearby life-size statue of the small but mighty Rosa Parks and the state Capitol sits this beautiful coffee shop on Dexter Avenue. Prevail has a modern interior with local art, a number of choices for lounge or work seating, bare brick walls, concrete floors, and a series of glass garage doors that open to a large and inviting outdoor courtyard. A brick wall with a large mural faces the rear, glass wall of the shop and provides the sense that you are in a gallery worth exploring. Leather sofas, upholstered lounge chairs, and rich wooden tables complement the glass, brick, and concrete used throughout the interior to create a comfortable and welcoming interior. The variety of places that welcome you to sit down had me scanning back and forth, trying to choose between numerous distinct and appealing options. I noted that despite the shops many hard surfaces, the music being played was crisp and pleasant. Prevail’s design team had thoughtfully hung a series of sound absorbing panels from the ceiling to soften the acoustic experience and the result was noticeably pleasant. I commented to the barista on this unusual level of detail for a coffee shop and was told that it really helps with their live music concert series featuring local artists on the first Saturday of each month. Nice. Their playlist was an Americana genre and I Shazamed a few tracks that caught my ear. They have high top bars and tables for work surfaces, plenty of outlets, and a broad bakery selection of both sweet and savory. Merch was solid. Their bathrooms are down a stairwell, which was a bit bothersome but the facilities were modern, clean, and spacious.

Make You Better:

Nothing stands out here. I mean, they even thought of hanging acoustical panels from the ceiling.

The obvious attention to detail that had me reluctant to leave and so, I ordered a tasty lemonade and lingered. My Prevail experience convinced me that visiting their other locations would likewise be a rewarding womple.
