Sunergos Coffee Shop
306 West Woodlawn Ave, Louisville, KY 41204
Sunergos is of Greek derivation, meaning collaborative service and this ethos of community acceptance is the message of their logo, originally a founders college notebook doodle of a rabbit on a tortoise on a elephant. Everything about this screams neighborhood coffee house and I witnessed interviews taking place amidst the reading of newspapers and other community bustle. They have five locations throughout Louisville and I chose this one because it houses their roastery.
Coffee:
They have good coffee. My cortado was made from their Columbian bean having flavors of lime zest and prune and my drip was their Guatemalan blend tasting of molasses and almond. The milk in my cortado was slightly over textured but the flavor was very good.
Barista:
I didn’t converse with my barista, as they were in deep discussion with another staff member. The person taking my order knew almost nothing about the coffee they were serving. Disappointingly, their perceived duty was, order taker.
Vibe:
Sunergos is unmistakably a community neighborhood hangout and it was populate with a diverse mix of folks. That, in combination with an eclectic mix of seating choices featuring a mix of vintage lounge chairs made you feel very comfortable being there. This location also houses their roastery which is visible beyond the glass wall in the rear of the space. The music was really good and I Shazamed an artist known as Kathleen who sang a beautiful cover of Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now. They had a pair of private bathrooms. A local artist was featured on their walls and merch was a mix of coffee accessories, branded accessories, logo’d apparel, and handicrafts from refugee women.
Make You Better
My interaction with their staff was deficient indicating either insufficient training, inappropriate selection, or someone having a bad day. Contrary to the space itself, the activity within it, and the community’s obvious embrace of the establishment, there was no presence of a customer centric culture amongst staff.
